1. “Blood Moons”: What’s the fuss about?

Not long ago, I watched a DVD called, “Blood Moons: Decoding the Imminent Heavenly Signs” written and presented by author Mark Biltz.

I was astounded by what I saw and heard! I knew about the “blood moon prophecy” in Joel, Chapter 2: “The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved; for on Mount Zion [the Temple Mount] and in Jerusalem there will be deliverance, as the Lord has said, among the survivors whom the Lord calls.” (Joel 2:31-32, NIV)   But I was not aware of the blood moon tetrads that have appeared, specifically on Jewish holy days and in conjunction with significant historic events.

Mark Biltz demonstrates in his documentary that we can know if an event is generated by the Lord God by checking his divine Day Runner  – the Hebrew calendar. Without going into a lot of detail, I will simply say that the feast days given through Moses (Leviticus 23) are the most important days of each year to the One who ordained them. And when a blood moon tetrad — 4 in a row — has fallen on days that are set apart to the Lord, some amazing things have happened in Jewish history!

For example, in 1493 and 1494, a blood moon tetrad happened after the expulsion of Jews from Spain and Portugal. It also coincided with the month of Av when, in Jewish history, there was a significant event following the 40-year wilderness journey of the Israelites after they left Egypt. (Read about it in  Numbers 14.) According to Mark Biltz’s research, the Jews were expelled on the 9th day of Av, the same date on which the spies sent out by Moses gave their bad report and defied God’s will concerning entering the Promised Land.  Before the expulsion, the Spanish government plundered the Jews who had migrated into the country following the Diaspora of 70A.D. (when the temple was destroyed and the Jews were scattered into the nations). King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella used the riches they acquired to help fund the finding of the New World!

In 1949 and 1950, four blood moons appeared after Israel was once again declared a nation in 1948, indicating that the gathering of God’s chosen people back to the land he gave to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob was not a man mandated event. It was orchestrated by their faithful God!

In 1967 and 1968, the blood moon tetrad appeared during the time of the Six-Day War, when the surrounding Arab nations participated in an unprovoked attack against Israel to try and reclaim the land given to to the Jews by the United Nations. The battle began on Sunday and ended on Friday — the day before the Jewish Sabbath day of rest, Shabbat! In that brief conflict, Israel recaptured Jerusalem, God’s City. Shortly after that, administration of the Temple Mount (and the Islamic Dome of the Rock) was turned over to Jordan.

Now here we are, living in the 21st Century, and the appearance of another blood moon tetrad is approaching. According to NASA, the first will appear on April 15, 2014 — the Jewish remembrance of Passover (Exodus 12). It will be followed exactly two weeks later by a total solar eclipse on April 29th. The second blood moon is due on October 8, 2014 – Sukkot, the Feast of Tabernacles (Leviticus 23:33-43). It will be followed by a partial solar eclipse on October 23rd.

In the Jewish scriptures, the moon is generally used to symbolize Israel, and the sun symbolizes the nations. A blood moon is associated with judgment.

In 2015, there will be a total solar eclipse on March 20th – the first day of the Jewish religious new year, Nisan 1. It will be followed by the third blood moon of the tetrad on April 4th – Passover!  Then on September 14th — Rosh Hashanah, the Feast of Trumpets (Leviticus 23:23-25) — there will be another total solar eclipse, two weeks before the fourth blood moon, again on the feast day of Sukkot, September 28th. On that night, a SUPER BLOOD MOON will be seen by Israelis in Jerusalem through the latticework roofs of their outdoor booths called sukkahs.

It shouldn’t come as any surprise that many authors and speakers have been taking advantage of this phenomena by writing and selling their research in the form of books, reports, and DVD’s, and by making personal appearances in various locations. That’s how they make their living. And that’s great for those of us who are interested in what they have to share. BUT we must be like the Berean Jews encountered by Paul. “Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. As a result, many of them believed, as did also a number of prominent Greek women and many Greek men.” (Acts 17:11-12, NIV)

So let’s dig deeper into this blood moon tetrad event and see what God may be trying to show us through the study of HIS calendar.
